Analysis on Tumblr

Why is everyone around using tumblr?

"Why did you talk about me behind my back?"

It's one of the most typical lines in the high school movie which is filled with teenage love and rumour plots.As time goes by, the reply to that question is turning from wordless awkwardness to another hilarious one: "Not behind your back, (followed by a word inappropriate), on tumblr y'all!"

It's universally acknowledged that this generation put everything online. No matter on facebook, twitter, or what I mentioned, tumblr, updating status and reblogging others posts seem to be the very first thing once people come back from work or school.

The rapid increasing users of tumblr let the website be on the wave."As of August 20, 2012, Tumblr has over 69.4 million blogs and more than 29.8 billion total posts. As of September 2011, the website receives more than 13 billion views per month. As of July 2010, the site receives 25,000 new users each day and as of July 2012, 71.6 million posts are created on the site each day. "

Tumblr is representitive with leading group of those who use posting as the main way to express what they want to say and what they actually feel about things. The reason I said 'Leading Group' is users of tumblr are mostly teenagers and young people, who were in the beginning of the trend using Internet mostly. "The service is most popular with the teen and college-aged user segments with half of Tumblr's visitor base being under the age of 25. "(from usage of tumblr)

So why the young find it interesting to communicate with or follow each other through tumblr?

Kind of similar to Facebook, tumblr uses a large amount of dark blue and white color in its logo and back of the page, which makes the first thought of seeing it be a relaxing, harmonious moment. (Wysocki 2004, pg 143.) 

The interface of tumblr seems to one of those important elements.

extreme simpleness and high variance are both attractive to everyone. Compared with facebook, tumblr is considered to be more variable in interface which means giving users more choices to picture what they like on how their tumblr looks. Not only with countless of themes provided, users make the look of their tumblr different through editing specific html such as adding music players, rearranging the outlay of images and gifs, changing the wallpaper with the one you like.I

From my perspective, young group really want to emphasize and be special in every single possible way and tumblr makes it real that no matter for the homepage or the visit page, there are a bunch of choices to make their tumblr look different and attractive from the outside, and then get visitors' eyes on what's special about their post with thoughts. 

Control of page is with ease

Tumblr uses the scrolling mode for users to scan all that they are following, with only one post can be seen each time, Personally I love this arrangement because it makes my focus apparent and easier to pass the contents I'm not really into. Once you keep scrolling down, the more posts will be revealed. And the little image of the house means homepage, it will be with a little red number if you get new posts to see. On the right top of the page there's a button showing an upward arrow, click this and you get to see the latest posts.

The design of control still goes back to the word: simpleness, which still catches everyone's eyes because simpleness is all we are looking for.This is the catchy point in design of page and control both.

Privacy is kept

Lots of people who are using other posting websites always registered with their real name and real information. But tumblr is more like a secret backyard, any private details is not needed to register and friending system is replaced with following system. If some other websites are good to make friends, tumblr is good to be a friend, what makes it a perfect medium to express personal opinion and funny, well mostly ridiculous experience without being known who you are.

No need to explain how crucial privacy is to all us.However, in Internet, if the privacy gets respected, users will feel safe and respected as well. This leads to the increasing number of users and the fame of website will get spreaded in no time.


In conclusion, as I mentioned above, tumblr's done a very great job in many aspect.I believe with the improving and adjusting of all these things, tumblr will get more and more users.
